Coffee, pizza, and cultural heritage – what's not to like? On this hackathon you'll have the opportunity to try out digital methods on material from the library's special collections and at the same time help to improve the material's potential for research.

The material we will be working with this time is the library’s Catalogue on Occasional Poetry. The catalogue lists the occasional poetry (poetry written to people on special occasions e.g. christenings, weddings, and funerals) extant at Uppsala University Library and covers material until 1959.

The catalogue cards are scanned and published online, and are a mixture of machine written and handwritten text. Because the OCR quality varies from card to card (depending on its original state) our mission is to correct the errors in the OCR (or transcribe the handwritten cards) and thus improve the catalogue’s searchability. With an improved catalogue, it will be much easier to request the occasional for study in the Special Collections Reading Rooms at Carolina Rediviva.

You are welcome to drop in at any time during the event. If you are planning to attend, please sign up (so that we can estimate how much pizza and drinks to order).

N.b. Bring your own laptop!

* hackathon is a portmanteau of 'hacker' and 'marathon' and is an event where hackers (such as you and I!) gather to develop and improve a digital resource.
