PictureSearch is a catalogue where you can search in Uppsala University Library's map and picture collections. The catalogue represents only a small part of the collections. Registering and scanning of pictures and maps is on-going. The work started in September 2006 and was made possible with an extra member of staff funded by the government's Access Project.
What's in PictureSearch?
PictureSearch mainly contains the greater part of the Library's unique collections of Swedish drawings, water colours and wash drawings. But it also includes other parts of the collections for example portraits and topographical pictures.
As far as maps are concerned the highest priority has been given to the hand drawn collection of Swedish and Finnish maps and old Swedish engravings and lithographic printed maps (pre-1900 AD).
Modern map series (for example the series produced by the Swedish Land Registry "Lantmäteriet") are not included in PictureSearch. The Library's collections of modern maps are partly searchable in the Library's online catalogue DISA and in the Swedish union library catalogue LIBRIS.
The easiest way to get an overview of the material that has been registered in PictureSearch is to browse the list of descriptors in the database. You can also find out more from this website about the Library's map and picture collections in order to form an idea of what might be found in the database.
Digital images
At present we have no digital images for a large part of the registered objects. The scanning of pictures is on-going. If a picture is missing we recommend that you make use of the written description. The description will give you good information about the picture or map.
In certain cases the word "Copyright" will appear instead of a digital image. This means that the University Library does not have permission to publish the picture since the copyright is held by a third party, for instance the photographer or artist.
The digital images in PictureSearch are protected by copyright legislation. You can however print out the low resolution pictures for personal use. High resolution pictures can be ordered using the form in PictureSearch or by contacting the Section for Maps and Pictures. Read more about how you can place an order, how you are allowed to use the pictures and the prices in the menu on the left.
