New techniques for old documents - Scientific examination methods in the service of preservation and book history
16-18 August 2010
This two-day conference, generously sponsored by Riksbankens jubileumsfond, has a broad scope covering many aspects of scientific analysis of documents, from DNA-analysis to current and future prospects of OCR-analysis of texts. Librarians, book historians and conservators should take this opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the information that can be drawn out of documents ranging from archaeological findings and war-damaged manuscripts to more ordinary library collections.
The general theme is divided into these five sessions:
- DNA-analysis
- Research in paper conservation
- Pigment analysis
- Dating of documents
- Reading texts -decipherment and image analysis

The satellite conference will take place between 16-18 August 2010 in Room IX, in the University Hall, Biskopsgatan 3, Uppsala, Sweden.
Participant registration will start on Monday, 16 August at 10-12 am with an additional possibility of registering on Tuesday 17 August at 9-10 am.
After lunch on Monday 16, there will be an opportunity for delegates to visit either Skokloster Castle with its unique 17th century library, the Uppsala University Library or the Museum Gustavianum i.e. the University museum. An additional fee of SEK 100 applies for the Skokloster tour.
Sessions start on Tuesday, August 17 at 10.00 am.
Registration fee: SEK 875 includes lunches, coffee and the conference dinner on Tuesday evening.
