Section for Maps and Pictures: map collection

There are around 150,000 maps at the Section for Maps and Pictures at Carolina Rediviva. The collections comprise both printed and manuscript maps from Sweden and abroad.

The greater part of all maps printed in Sweden from the end of the 17th century and up to today's modern publications are in the collections. The collections also include Swedish and Finnish manuscript maps from the 17th century up to the 20th century.

There is also a large number of foreign engraved, lithographic and printed maps at the Section for Maps and Pictures . The foreign map collection extends with some exceptions into the 20th century.

Several of the University Library's most famous treasures are in fact maps. The foremost that should be mentioned are the Carta Marina, a map of the Nordic countries from 1539 and the Map of Mexico, a manuscript map of Mexico City on parchment from around 1550. Both maps are on display in the exhibition known as Expo Rediviva.

Not all maps and atlases are searchable in the Library's online catalogues. The collections are mainly listed in published and unpublished special catalogues. Please contact the Section for Maps and Pictures if you cannot find a map that you are looking for in Uppsala University Library Catalogue and Catalogue 1962
