In the 1890s the Uppsala University Library received generous donations of literature in the Romance languages from Provence and other areas from the Associate Professor of Romance Languages, Carl Wahlund. The greater part of the donation is still intact in the "Wahlund Collection".
Associate Professor Carl Wahlund (1846-1913), was a very knowledgeable and active book collector of independent means. His strength was collecting books within his own sphere of scholarly interest. Only the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris could match his collections of old French philology and literature.
In 1892 he donated his collection from Provence to the University Library and in the following year he deposited his entire Romance language collection here. This was bequethed to the Library in 1913. The collection of printed works was supplemented with Wahlund's collection of manuscripts. In total the donations amounted to approximately 6,500 volumes and brochures. In addition Carl Wahlund donated money for future acquisitions to the Library's book collections.
The printed items in the collection can be found in Catalogue 1962 and to a certain extent in LIBRIS and the Uppsala University Library Catalogue. All books that once belonged to Carl Wahlund have the shelfmark "BW" (Bibliothèque Wahlund) with a suffix denoting the subject or other indicator.
