Uppsala University Library has a Linnean collection that spans 50 metres of shelving and consists of works both by and about Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778).
Books
Virtually all Linnaeus' publications are to be found in Carolina Rediviva, from the first edition of his seminal work Systema naturae 1735 to Nemesis Divina, which was published posthumously. We also have all the doctoral theses that were written under Linnaeus' supervision at Uppsala University.
Moreover there is a collection from the Linnean Foundation at Hammarby that consists of works that belonged to Linnaeus' own library. These books formed part of the collection that was at one stage sold by Linnaeus' widow to The Linnean Society in London. Some of the books, mainly about medicine, were returned to Sweden at the end of the 19th century on the grounds that they did not fit in subject-wise.
Over and above Linnaeus' own publications and his own book collection, the University Library collects books about Linnaeus.
Linnaeus projects
The Library participates in various projects, for example Linnaeus Link, which is supported by a consortium of museums, archives, libraries and other institutions in Europe and the USA. The project, co-ordinated by the Linnean Society of London, aims to publish an online catalogue of all Linnaeus' works and to register the holdings of Linnean items - i.e. publications, manuscripts and specimens - in libraries and archives across the world.
Another project, Linnaean Correspondence, is working on the digital publication of Linnaeus' letters. This project is run by the Swedish Linnaean Society.
