Scholarly theses

Uppsala University Library holds both old and new academic theses from Swedish universities and colleges of higher education as well as from many other seats of learning around the world.

Modern academic theses

Many of the modern theses at Uppsala University Library, whether they originate in Uppsala or somewhere else, are available online as e-books. This is particularly so with theses from the Faculties of Science and Technology, Medicine and Pharmacy which are usually based on a raft of published articles, known as compilation theses.

Earlier academic theses

Uppsala University Library's collection of older academic theses published in Sweden and Finland is virtually complete for the period 1600 to 1855. Theses are sometimes referred to as dissertations.

The cataloguing of older Swedish academic theses in LIBRIS, which is being carried out as a project, is however far from complete. This means that if you are searching in the Uppsala University Library collections, you will need to refer to Johan Hinric Lidén's printed inventory of publicly defended theses at the universities of Uppsala, Lund and Åbo and Swedish schools and clerical assemblies up to 1777 AD. Following on from this is an inventory up to 1855 compiled by Gabriel Marklin.

Together these two inventories make such a complete bibliography of this category that they are not included in Collijn's bibliograhy of Swedish 17th century imprints. Nor were they included in the bibliography of Swedish publications between 1700-1829 (SB17) that is now a part of LIBRIS.

Lidén's and Marklin's inventories can be used both in the catalogue room and the Special Reading Room at Carolina Rediviva.

Swedish and Finnish academic theses after 1855 can be found in Catalogue 1962.

Swedish "extra patriam" theses, i.e. academic theses written by Swedes at foreign universities, are treated as Swedish, but they are not included in the inventories of Lidén and Marklin. They are listed, together with other foreign theses, in an in-house catalogue and they can requested manually, preferably with a source reference.
